Speaker: Mr. Masud Cader, Lead of Country Analytics, International Finance Corporation – World Bank Group "On the Predictability of Growth"

On the predictability of Growth.

A country's productive structure and competitiveness are harbingers of growth. Growth is a dynamic process based on capabilities that are difficult to define and measure across countries. This talk discusses the economic fitness indicator (or complexity-weighted diversity of production) as a method to explore a country's relative growth potential. The results identify two types of growth: one in which diversification and complexity is paramount, and another in which other factors govern. This classification is used to create a forecasting system, defining future growth trajectories for similar countries, and compares projected long-term, five-year forecasts with traditional methods used by the International Monetary Fund. The results show that Economic Fitness led forecasts perform better than IMF WEO process long-term growth forecasts. Production structure characterized by Economic Fitness is a good long-term predictor of growth.
